If you want to raise kids who love Hebrew, start from the basics! Here are three Hebrew words for kids that you should teach them. These words have magical powers and can come in very handy when wanting to communicate in Hebrew.
Todah means “thank you”
If you want to go the extra mile say “Todah Raba”, which means “thank you very much”. This is one of the first words that Israeli kids learn. Walking down the streets of Tel-Aviv you will most likely hear a parent say to their child “Say To-” and the child, if well behaved, is expected to day “dah”.
Bevakasha means “please”
However, if you did someone a favor, “Bevakasha” can also mean “you’re welcome”. Saying your please and thank yous can come in very handy when communicating on the street, negotiating with vendors and just practicing being a well-mannered person – all while speaking Hebrew.
Slicha means “sorry”
Saying sorry can go a long way, especially in a foreign country. Also, if you want someone to move out of the way, “Slicha” can mean “excuse me”. “Slicha, can you please pass me the Challah?” sounds a lot better in Hebrew!
How to teach Hebrew words for kids
There are a few different ways you can teach your kids the 3 Hebrew magic words. One way is to explain why you think they’re important, and then give some examples of how you’ve used them in your own life. You can also ask your kids to come up with examples of when they could use the words. Another option is to role-play different scenarios with your kids, so they can practice using the words themselves. The best thing you can do is to model it to them and just replace the English words you’ve been using so far with Hebrew ones. And of course – don’t forget to incorporate Israeli music!
