The Seven Species and Tu Bishvat Traditions

Seven Species for Tu Bishvat

The Torah Origin of the Seven Species

Tu Bishvat, the Jewish new year for trees, draws its roots from the ancient wisdom of the Torah. The concept of the seven species, also known as “Shivat Haminim,” finds its mention in the book of Deuteronomy. In Devarim 8:8, the Torah lists these seven special fruits and grains that are deeply connected to the land of Israel, signifying its richness and divine blessing.

Holiday of Tu Bishvat: Orla and Shmita Rules

The seven species are wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates. These fruits and grains hold a central place in the celebration of Tu Bishvat, symbolizing the fertility and abundance of the land. It’s important to note that the rules of Orla (the prohibition of eating the fruit from a tree during its first three years) and Shmita (the Sabbatical year for the land) pertain specifically to produce grown in the land of Israel. The counting of the years starts from Tu Bishvat, serving as the first day of the agricultural year.

Importance Torah Sources and Hebrew Teaching

Teaching children about Tu Bishvat goes beyond the celebration of trees and fruits; it offers a unique opportunity to connect with ancient sources and the richness of the Hebrew language. Incorporating the stories and wisdom from the Torah into the narrative of the seven species adds depth and context to the celebration. By introducing children to the significance of each species, their biblical roots, and the agricultural practices associated with them, we provide a holistic understanding of Tu Bishvat. Furthermore, embracing the Hebrew language in teaching about the holiday enhances the cultural and linguistic connection. Explaining the names of the seven species in Hebrew, along with their meanings, fosters a sense of identity and appreciation for the linguistic heritage. It becomes a journey of discovery, connecting the present generation with the ancient traditions embedded in the Hebrew language.
